Possible changes to Waterloo rental bylaws

A revised rental property bylaw will be presented tonight at Waterloo City Council. The main purpose of the revised bylaw is to increase tenant health and safety and to better clean up rental properties.

There were many revisions to the January 10th report after a wide variety of feedback.

Existing lodging house licenses will be grandfathered so the maximum number of renters will stay the same, which was a big issue in the feedback from the original draft.

The process of subletting has become much easier for tenants and will stay under the proposed bylaw.

No decision will be made tonight. On May 9th, council will hear delegations on the issue, and consider approving the revised bylaw.
