K-W Rally for Egypt

Members of the K-W Arab community rallied at Kitchener City Hall Square to celebrate the end of Hosni Mubarak’s rule in Egypt.

With happy voices demonstrators chanted, waved flags, and carried signs that read “Happy birthday Egypt” and “Long live the Egyptian revolution.”

Demonstrator Samih Alqawlaq says they were chanting long live Egypt. “People are sending their support to people in Egypt and congratulating them on what thy have achieved.”

University of Waterloo student and rally organizer Layla Jabbour says the events in Egypt inspired her and given her renewed hope to change the world. “We are so ecstatic that this actually happened and we hope that other Arab countries and nations suffering under a dictatorship can come together and do the same thing that Egypt did.”

Egyptian-Canadians and others have gathered on Parliament Hill, and celebrations have also been held in Montreal and Toronto.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has also issued a statement calling for free and fair democratic elections as Egypt moves forward.
