A tough start to the day for the Rangers Ryan Murphy. The young defenceman was cut from Canada’s World Junior team Wednesday morning.

Murphy was 1 of 9 players cut as the team made its final cuts in prepartion for the 2011 World Junior Hockey Championship. The 17-year old is projected to be a top selection in next year’s NHL Entry Draft. Forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Brandon Pirri, defencemen Ryan Murray and Mark Pysyk and goaltenders JP Anderson and Calvin Pickard are others going home early.

The cuts leave head coach Dave Cameron and his staff with a 22-man roster, made-up of 13 forwards, 7 defencemen and 2 goaltenders.

This year’s tournament takes place in Buffalo. Team Canada’s first game is Boxing Day at HSBC Arena against what’s expected to be a tough Russian squad.
