Jack Taunton to chair task force on the use of drugs in football

The doctor who oversaw medical services and the doping control program at the Vancouver Olympics will chair a task force on the use of banned substances in football.

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport has appointed Jack Taunton to take the lead, saying he has the conviction to get to the bottom of the issue, as well as find and implement solutions.

University of Waterloo’s athletic director Bob Copeland is also on the task force, as is Matt Torigian, the chief of Waterloo Regional Police.

Taunton says the group is made up of talented and professional leaders in the sport who are determined to rid football of performance enhancing drugs.

The task force developed out of a number of positive drug tests on university football players, including nine doping violations at the University of Waterloo.

That led to a suspension of the university’s football team for one season.

Regional police also uncovered a suspected trafficking ring at the school last March.
