Early Christmas for UFC fans

The UFC 131 is coming to Ontario on Saturday, April 30th and the Rogers Centre in Toronto will play host.

President of the UFC Dana White says he expects the mixed martial arts show to be massive.

One local MMA fighter says he is pleased with the news and plans to be there for the paperview event.

Matt Dunning says the recognition their sport is getting has him feeling optimistic.

He says it means he will no longer have to go out of Ontario to compete and he suggests Toronto’s UFC show could pave the way for more to come to this area, in cities like Hamilton and Kitchener.

Officials at the Aud say they are observing the market but haven’t been approached to host an event yet.

Word of the UFC event comes one day after the Ontario Athletics Commission announced fighters can start applying for a license on January 1st.

The provincial government changed its mind on UFC fighting in August after shows in Vancouver and Montreal posted record sellouts for the MMA juggernaut.
