Province gets tough on suspended drivers

The province announced today it is getting tougher on people who drive with a suspended license.

Starting December 1st, police in Ontario will be allowed to impound vehicles driven by someone who is caught with a suspended license, refuses a breathalyzer, has a blood alcohol level over .08 or was driving without an ignition interlock device.

The law also applies to someone driving while under certain license suspensions, including non-payment of family support.

The government is hoping the new law will drastically reduce the number of drivers with a suspended license who get behind the wheel.

Staff Sergeant Scott Diefenbaker with Waterloo Regional Police says taking away someone’s ability to be mobile is a big deterrent.

Right now, vehicles are only impounded if someone is charged with stunt driving.
