Festival Theatre expansion

Drayton Entertainment is undergoing a major renovation at its Festival Theatre.

One of the major changes will be the stage, which will expand in size by 17 feet.

General Manager Peter Black says the news stage will be double its current size and will enable them to attract larger productions.

The renovation also includes making the entrance accessible to individuals with disabilities, brick re-pointing to preserve the historical and architectural integrity of the building and exterior lighting enhancements.

Black says work will not be finished in time for the opening of “High School Musical” and so that performance has been moved to the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse.

The renovation is being funded in part by the Building Canada infrastructure initiative launched by the Government of Canada and Province of Ontario. Black says the initiative will cover a third of the cost of the project with the provincial and federal governments each chipping in up to a third and Drayton picking up the rest of the tab.

The total cost of the renovation is $1.3-million.

The project is expected to be completed by June for the opening of “On Golden Pond.”
