Local students head to Oshawa with a green message

A group of Kitchener public school students are in Oshawa today for a provincial competition – and with a message for adults.

The students attend Suddaby Public School in Kitchener, are between the ages of 9 and 12, and belong to the FIRST Lego Robotics club.

Teacher Krista Weltz-Gordon says the theme is transportation-related, and the students tackled the use of corn-based ethanol for use as fuel.

She says the students’ research found a much better alternative would be ethanol made from switchgrass.

They discovered several benefits to using switchgrass including it yields a much higher amount of ethanol per acre than corn, is native to the area, meaning it does not require prime farmland to grow, and it would not drive up the cost of corn, which is a major staple of the world’s food diet.
